Dear Reader,
Welcome

I have a "checkered" past for trying lots of things. I am a risk-taker. I began writing in high school and let it drop for the excitement of college and of going out on my own. I came back to it much later.

I was married and had a young family when we went to Jack London State Park in Glen Ellen, California for an outing. I was chatting with a park ranger and mentioned that I had a weekly column on fibers and textiles for a regional daily. He said, "Have I got something to show you." He led me to a secret door in "The House of Happy Walls," the building Charmian London had erected to house and to display the memorabilia of her life with Jack London. The door opened to stairs leading to her private apartment.

The first thing the ranger showed me was Charmian's riding jacket: a bright red blazer of lamb suede. Her closet was full of custom made dresses with matching coats and shoes. Her "dainties" were silk charmeuse edged with lace. I was hooked. Who was Charmian London?

The result is years of research, trekking through the London ranch and the Islands of Hawaii. And now, The Second Mrs. London. It has been a grand adventure. I hope you enjoy getting to know Charmian as I have.

About Me

A Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, native, I grew up in the Craftsman house I was brought to when I was born.

In my checkered past, I have been a roadie for the late Jimmie Rogers; the youngest woman bartender in Idaho; graduate student/teaching assistant and chaperone for the first collegiate “Bat Girls” at Southern Illinois University; unlimited hydroplane race crew member; an English instructor at North Idaho College; under-cover lay operative for Broward/Miami Vice (Prostitution Division); host of the “green room” and assistant to Ed McMahon on the “Tonight Show;” high school teacher; Hospice volunteer; and a Literary Escort.

With my husband, Mark, I co-founded Opera Coeur d’Alene. I was Executive director of the Coeur d’Alene Symphony and produced the “Evening with Garrison Keillor,” a benefit for the Symphony.

And, I am, always, a writer.

My Book

San Francisco, Spring of 1900: Charmian Kittredge is an ambitious woman of twenty-nine, single, and unafraid to challenge the conventions of polite society. Her life will be forever changed when she accompanies her literary editor aunt to a luncheon to meet young writer Jack London, fresh from the Klondike and ready for fame, and they experience instant chemistry.

THE SECOND

MRS. LONDON

Jack is charmed to discover that Charmian’s intellect is as compelling as her beauty, and the attraction builds with each encounter, culminating in an invitation to a picnic date—one that Jack will break with the barest of notes announcing his marriage to another.

Yet social circles conspire to bring them back together, and the pair discover that time has done nothing to quell the attraction they feel. Charmian chooses to be in Jack’s life no matter the consequence—becoming his friend, confidante, editor, lover—and eventually The Second Mrs. London.

Reviews

While the literary icon Jack London is widely revered, in "The Second Mrs. London," author Marlo Faulkner elevates Charmaine Kittredge to the position of prominence she deserves. This magnificent love story illuminates how the two free-spirited adventurers had no choice but to be together. We experience them living their dreams as Faulkner shares their grand and often perilous voyages on the high seas. This extraordinary story is a testament to Charmaine's unbreakable resolve and bold heart. She made it possible for Jack to be Jack London.
